Trichy: The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has rolled out a measure to curb an intractable problem - air pollution. It has selected 23 institutions across the state to install monitoring sensors at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore. The sensors, to be installed in each institute, will keep a check on rising pollution levels and monitor quality of air.

With two sensors and an LED board, the air quality in each city will be monitored by the pollution control board. In Trichy region, three institutions have been selected.

The head and associate professor of department of bio-technology at St Joseph's College, Dr SR Senthil Kumar, will be the technical assistant for the project in the city. He said, "The project will help no end for the pollution control board to monitor the air quality level, based on which necessary measures can be adopted. Currently, the system exists only in Chennai. With the installation of monitoring sensors, the board will get data from 23 locations across the state."

The sensors will record the percentage of carbon-dioxide levels and other particulate matters present in the air.

St Joseph's College recently signed a memorandum of understanding with TNPCB officials in the presence of minister for environment and pollution Thoppu N Venkatachalam for the installation of the sensors on the college premises. Principal of the college Rev Dr Andrew Francis SJ said that the college had identified a spot for the installation of the sensors.

College authorities are expecting that the project will be completed by the end of this month. Periodical reports will be sent to the board at the state as well as district-level. Monitoring sensors will be installed at the Bishop Heber College in the city as well.
