A member of the Madhya Pradesh Ranji squad and his father, a former Ranji player, were among four persons arrested in Sagar for allegedly killing a black buck.

While Rameez Khan, a left-handed all-rounder who made his debut in 2011, is a regular member of the Ranji team, his father Mohammed Khan — who is now a selector of the Under-23 team — played two matches way back in the 1970s.

Rameez (26) has scored more than 1,000 runs in Ranji trophy and has taken eight wickets. Several other members of the family have also played at junior and senior levels, said sources in the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA). Mohammed’s brother Farukh is a selector of the Under-19 team.

Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) SPS Tiwari told The Indian Express that the accused killed the black buck using a .22 rifle in an agriculture field about 20 km from Sagar town. They later skinned the animal, cut it into pieces and were on way back when a police patrol apprehended them, seizing the weapon and the meat.

The four, including Shahazad, 45, and Shaikh Gaffar, 30, were riding two bikes and had kept the meat in two bags.

“Given the nature of the crime they seem to be habitual offenders,” said the DFO. He, however, added that police or the forest authorities had so far not found evidence of their involvement in past crimes.

The four were produced before a court in Rehli that remanded them in judicial custody.
