Tiger in Pench reserve electrocuted

A tiger was electrocuted in a forest near Pench Tiger Reserve, taking to two the number of big cats the reserve has lost in the last one week due to unnatural causes.

While a probe is on to establish the cause of death of a male tiger whose carcass was found in Deolapar range in Maharashtra on January 2, a big cat was found electrocuted in Sankh village, under Chhindwara (East) territorial division close to the reserve Friday.

Park director Subhranjan Sen said the tiger was possibly electrocuted after it came in contact with a fence meant to save crops from wild boars.

Five people have been booked in connection with Friday’s death. Even though the killing did not appear to be intentional, death due to electrocution amounts to poaching, a park official said, adding that they would also probe if there was any foul play.
