Pune: Union minister of state for environment, forests and climate change Prakash Javadekar said on Thursday that securing alliances with the largest countries and small island nations helped India secure the Paris deal.

"In the same way that the existence of the Pacific and Atlantic island nations is threatened due to climate change, our territory includes two archipelagos that are also threatened by climate change and have seen extraordinary flooding conditions in recent years. We found enough common ground to negotiate with larger nations," he said.

Javadekar was in the city to inaugurate the tenth edition of the KirloskarVasundhara International Film Festival. In his address, the minister further stated, "We accept that climate change is a reality. It was agreed in Paris that we will not let the world temperature exceed beyond two degrees. We must adopt sustainable lifestyle practices and reduce waste generation," he said.

The week-long film festival will include screening of films concerning the environment and conservation efforts of flora and fauna besides a photo exhibition, conferences, and an eco bazaar. The festival organisers also feted various activists and professionals who have been working to integrate the environment and the communities around it.

Those feted included environmental filmmaker John Bowman, the three women forest guards of the Gir sanctuary in Gujarat, and PramodPatil, whose efforts to save the Great Indian Bustard saw him bag the Whitley Awards, known as the green Oscars.
