Expanding the scope of the ongoing case on air pollution, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) Wednesday directed various state governments to submit data on air quality by next month. Noting that the Supreme Court was already hearing a case related to air pollution in the capital, the green tribunal said it would restrict its orders to “places other than Delhi”.

The principal bench of NGT noted that the issue of air quality in cities such as Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Patna, Lucknow, Allahabad, Kanpur, Varanasi, Pune, Nagpur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar had to be addressed and directed that notices be issued to the respective state governments. The NGT directed counsels for Gujarat, Bihar, Punjab, UP, Telangana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Jharkand, who were present Wednesday, to “file a comprehensive affidavit stating the steps taken by the respective states in the respective cities, for prevention and control of air pollution.”

The NGT also directed these states to collect samples on ambient air quality and submit an analysis report of the data by February 9, including the contribution of various sources.

“They shall also state the steps they are taking for controlling and preventing air pollution, resulting from dust emission… emission from burning of municipal solid waste and other waste including burning of agriculture residue and vehicular pollution,” the NGT said in its order. It asked the pollution control boards of the states to perform submit reports in consultation with the Central Pollution Control Board.
