THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) prepared by National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (Natpac) has mentioned Thiruvananthapuram as a city with less pollution. The service-level benchmark prepared for CMP has marked 5, which indicates good, for pollution levels in the city.

Presence of SO2, oxides of nitrogen, suspended particulate matter and respirable suspended particulate matter were the parameters tested for checking the pollution level.

The service-level benchmarks are must for CMP as per the guidelines of Union ministry for urban development. The service-level benchmarks are process of determining how effectively and efficiently the present transportation system is performing in the existing situation. Performance indicators describe the levels of transport performance in the cities, its safety and access, air pollution, accidents, congestion and economic aspects of transportation division in the city.

The city has scored fairly well for public transport facilities. However, score for integrated land use transport system was below average. The CMP noted that there was less coherence between city structure and public transport system. The CMP has found that public transport in the city was financially sustainable, but needs considerable improvements.

City was rated 'poor' in the availability of parking spaces. "The city authorities need to initiate immediate actions with respect of providing adequate parking facilities, the CMP noted. The travel speed along major corridors was also very low due to high signal density, extensive queuing at critical intersections and inappropriate signal timing.

City was rated 'poor' in terms of facilities for non-motorized transport (NMT) and intelligent traffic surveillance facilities.

Pedestrian facilities such as footpaths, street lights, etc. need improvement, CMP observed.

The CMP has given due recognition for development of NMT and pedestrians facilities. Pedestrianization of certain stretches and cycle tracks for upcoming projects are some of the suggestions in the plan. The CMP has suggested multi-stored commercial-cum-parking complexes at 15 locations and shared parking in various public institutions.
