Civic bodies crack the whip on polluters

The Hindu , Sunday, July 19, 2015
Correspondent :
The municipal corporations have been cracking down on polluters — from builders whose construction sites are causing dust pollution to people burning leaves and garbage.

A total of 285 builders have been fined Rs.50,000 each by the three corporations for flouting the National Green Tribunal orders to control air pollution at construction sites.

The South Delhi corporation has fined 101 builders this week for air pollution emanating from construction sites, the East Delhi body has issued 75 fines and the North Delhi civic body has fined 108 builders. As per an NGT order in April, the civic bodies are supposed to impose the fine on anyone whose construction sites are not covered properly.

The North body recently issued 39 challans for burning of leaves, garbage, etc., as per a July 14 order of the NGT.

The SDMC Central Zone authorities have also taken action against illegal construction in Greater Kailash, Defence Colony, Lajpat Nagar, Daryaganj, Hari Nagar Ashram, East of Kailash, Bhogal, Jangpura, Sunder Nagar, SaritaVihar and Badarpur. Over the past 25 days, about 100 unauthorised constructions have been demolished or sealed.
