Mangroves in Malad shrunk by land mafia, says complaint

MUMBAI: Destruction of mangroves by the land mafia has been reported along the Madh Marve road in Malad (east). A complaint was filed with the Mangrove Conservation Cell as well as the local police by the NGO Watchdog Foundation.

The reports of destruction by dumping debris comes less than a week after the Indian Forest Survey report documenting an increase in mangrove cover in the suburbs.

Advocate Godfrey Pimenta said the destruction was systematic with the objective of reclaiming land. "This is a common modus operandi in the area. Once the reclamation is complete, hutments come up on the land," said Pimenta, whose NGO had also complained against ready-mix cement plants in the area causing air pollution.

Pimenta and other activists also expressed scepticism about the reported growth in mangrove cover.
