In an attempt to check the rising pollution levels in the city, the municipal corporation of Gurgaon ( MCG) has identified 16 sites to dump construction and demolition waste. The dumping areas have been divided into four zones ? one each in Sohna, Gurgaon, Pataudi and Badshahpur blocks of Gurgaon.

According to officials, Gurgaon ? that generates nearly 500 to 700 tonnes of construction waste every day ? does not have its own construction and demolition waste management plant. Open areas like green belts on the roadside, vacant plots of various localities and sometimes in the Aravallis along the Gurgaon-Faridabad road are used as dumping sites by the developers. However, the civic body officials have said that dumping has been checked after the National Green Tribunal (NGT), in July this year, asked the civic body to check air pollution due to increase in construction activity.

In an order issued by the MCG last week, the civic body stated that rubble collected from Gurgaon district has to be dumped in the 16 designated sites. The civic body has decided that it would collect construction and demolition waste at Rs 1,000 per trolley and Rs 3,000 for each dumper. The service can be availed by dialling the toll free number, 1800180187. The order also mentioned that the civic body will take strict action against violators by slapping a fine of Rs 5,000 for first offence and hike the penalty by 20 per cent for each subsequent offence.
