Though the intention was good, but it seems that the higher and technicaleducation department have been little late in issuing a notification for colleges that have already closed for a Diwalivacation one week back. The notification said that college professors and teachers should educate students about the ill effects of the fireworks.

The said notification was issued on 9 November as per the Supreme Courtdirections on 16 October.

The notification instructed not to burst fire crackers as they spread not only noise pollution but air pollution as well. It also states that the professors in colleges should create an awareness among the students that if they wish to burst firecrackers then it should be less powerful ones. The principal of colleges should encourage teachers/professors to educate their students about this instructions.

While the government want education to be given to students, the colleges are already closed for Diwali vacation says the city college principals.

Dr Minu Madlani, principal of KPB Hinduja College, said, "If this instructions had come earlier when the college was functioning we could have kept the awareness program for our students. But anyways the students are more mature than before and they do not burst fire crackers during Diwali, but celebrate it more as a festival of lights."

Echoing the sentiments of Madlani another principal from western zone (on condition of anonymity), said, "We have not yet received such circular from the higher education department. However, college was closed for vacation from 21 October so there is no chance that we can have awareness program on ill effects of fireworks for the students."
