National bird kept for sale at Mira road rescued

On Wednesday afternoon, forest official from Thane rushed to rescue two peacocks and turtles after they were tipped off about the National bird being kept on sale at pet shop in Mira road. The possibility of breeding, poaching and smuggling has been probed by the forest and police officials.

Peacock being the National Bird is been protected species under schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, hence hunting or poaching is a punishable offence under section 9, 39, 40(2), 49B of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and Under Section 11 of Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, 1960. The forest officials were conducting the punchnama and were in the process of filing the formal complaint against the shop owner at Naya Nagar police station in Mira road. "We were tipped off about the activity in the shop and we rushed to spot and found two peacocks which were kept in a cruel state and its an offence to keep peacock as its a protected species", said a Forest official.

"The turtles are Singaporean and doesn't come under wildlife protection act but posession of peacock leads to immediate arrest",said the official.

"We are taking the statements of the owner and are probing the case as we suspect that the man was involved in either breeding, poaching or smuggling it from the protected forest region", said a senior forest official.

Rajendra Magdum, Range forest officer, Mumbai region, confirmed the incident and said, "We have taken two peacocks in our custody which was kept for sale and have registered the case against the shop owner while we are probing further", said Magdum
