A project in collaboration with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been prepared to take mitigation action related with renewable energy efficiency under (GEF) Global Environmental Faculty, says Dev Dutt Sharma, chairman of Pollution Control Board, Jharkhand.

He was addressing a two-day national conference on Environmental Challenges and Solutions (NC-ECS 2015) at CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory auditorium.

“The GEF secretariat has agreed to fund this project. This is likely to start in the early next year. Various activities to be taken up are under this project inter alia include: Energy efficient municipal water pumping in mining Area Development Authority, Dhanbad, Roof top grid connected Solar Power projects in Project building and Nepal House, and Solar street lighting in Bokaro. In addition to above, two more projects are in pipeline these are: Promotion of climate resilient adaption through sustainable forest management practices, and Micro and mini grid for improving energy access in rural areas of Jharkhand,” Sharma added.

A city based NGO -’Nature, Jamshedpur’ in association with CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory, Indian Institute of Metal Jamshedpur Chapter, Tata Steel and Central University of Jharkhand (CUJ) ,Ranchi. More than 115 delegates are participated in the conference from various industries, institutions and universities across the country.

The inaugural function started with the traditional lighting of ceremonial lamp. Dr Santanu Bhattacharjee, Chief Scientist and Adviser Management , CSIR-NML welcomed the gathering and highlighted on the importance of the seminar at the National level.

Sharma said, “The global temperature has risen by about 0.9 degree Celsius during the Past 100 years. It is expected to rise by more than 2.7 degree Celsius by the end of 21st Century if no suitable measures are taken. This will have disastrous consequences all around the world in the form of sea level rise and extreme weather events. We can’t change the past but we can certainly change the future”.

Sharma said, “India will have to mobilize new and additional funds from developed countries to implement its mitigation and adaption actions in view of huge funds requirement and resource gap. India has made it clear that it expects developed nations to come out with more ambitious climate action plan. As far as Jharkhand State Action Plan on Climate Change is concerned, it is endorsed by the National Steering Committee on Climate Change. As a follow up, we have prepared a project involving expenditure of `172.72 Crore during a period of ten years under the Green India Mission and the same has been approved by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.”
