PUDUCHERRY: Stressing that the Territorial government was keen on protecting the environment, Electricity Minister T Thiagarajan said the government had taken efforts to tap renewable energy sources. He was addressing a gathering at a regional workshop on ‘Low carbon development and climate change’ on Tuesday.
The Minister said the government has taken a decision not to allow functioning of industries causing harm to the environment and also those which use a lot of water. He said the growing vehicle population was a cause for concern as it produces carbon emissions contributing to increased pollution.
Speaking on the occasion, president of All India Women’s Conference Veena Kohli said that women have practical understanding of adaptation and hence they can play a vital role in climate change adaptation and mitigation action.
She said the impact of climate change which results in drought, extreme weather events and reduced food and water security affect women with the poorest being the most vulnerable.
She said even though women were disproportionately affected, they were unrepresented or poorly represented in policy making on climate change. Kohli said that involving women was important to achieve long-term action needed for sustaining clean environment.
The outcome of the workshop would be made into a report and the recommendations submitted to the government. The final report would be presented at an event proposed at the Conference of Parties in Paris in December, she said.
