Need feasible solutions to combat air pollution in capital: Manish Sisodia

A workshop on ‘dust control measures to control air pollution’, held at the Delhi secretariat on Wednesday, pointed out the need of laying down construction project-specific air quality norms and setting up of environment management teams in construction companies, according to government officials. Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia stressed on the need to come out with feasible solutions to address the issue of air pollution. The Delhi government’s environment department had organised the half-day workshop, taking into account the need for implementation and enforcement of the existing norms and regulations for controlling dust pollution. The workshop was attended by government agencies including the public works department (PWD), Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Central Public Works Department (CPWD), Union Ministry of Urban Development, municipal corporations, Delhi Cantonment Board, Airport Authority of India, construction projects awaiting environment clearances, academic institutes and NGOs. Speakers from the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation spoke during three presentations at the workshop. The participants discussed the greater need for community connect for mass sensitisation as well as the awareness and participation of people to address the problem of dust, said government officials. Construction companies, officials said, need to have environment management teams prioritising environmental issues. Local and statutory bodies need capacity building for the enforcement of existing environmental norms and orders of the National Green Tribunal, said government officials.
