Parliament Panel Eliciting Views on E-waste Mgmt Act

VISAKHAPATNAM: Parliamentary committee on subordinate legislation (Rajya Sabha) chairman T Subbarami Reddy said that the committee would elicit opinions and suggestions from industrial units and public sector undertakings (PSUs) across the country to submit a comprehensive report to the government on the proposed amendments to the e-Waste Management Act, 2013. The team visited Mumbai, Benguluru and Visakhapatnam and will also visit a few more cities towards that end.

Addressing newsmen, Subbarami Reddy said here Saturday that their main focus would be on decreasing air pollution, for which they had visited the PSUs for three days and obtained their views and suggested proper implementation of the e-waste and solid waste managements, environment and coastal regulation zone. Reddy said that against 40 lakh saplings to be planted in four years, only 14 lakh were planted in the last two years by the PSUs and other agencies involved in Green Visakha project. He wanted rest of the 26 lakh saplings to be planted within two years to decrease air pollution levels in the city.

Meanwhile, the committee visited KGH and Vizag Railway station here Saturday. During the KGH visit, Subbarami Reddy said that the 1,200-bed KGH has just around 200 nurses. Subbarami Reddy said that with the help of the PSUs and other agencies, they had contributed Rs 75 crore for super speciality block in the KGH, and the govt would additionally release Rs 300 crore more to construct a bigger block with equipments.

Meanwhile, the RS member also said that Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, established by the Atomic Energy Commission at Aganampudi, was not completed. Reddy said that though nearly Rs 400 crore had already been released in the past, the hospital was not completed so far. Reddy also said that more escalators and toilets will be constructed in the railway station.

Committee members JP Sharma, K Keshava Rao, Arvind Kumar Singh, Shankarbhai N Vegad, KP Ramalingam and Mahesh Tiwari took part.
