NEW DELHI: The traffic police have identified five alternative routes for heavy polluting vehicles. The move comes days after NGT directed the cops to submit a list of routes for non-destined trucks until the eastern and western peripheral expressways are ready. The proposal aimed at reducing air pollution in Delhi will be placed before NGT on Monday.

"Our first aim will be to dissuade the trucks from entering the city by putting up deterrent measures while the second will be to provide an alternative route even before they enter NCR. The state government has to come up with the deterrent plan," said a senior traffic police officer.

Following NGT's order, senior traffic police officers met their counterparts from the neighbouring states and decided to reopen some of the routes through Sonepat, Murthal, Faridabad and Ghaziabad. These routes were identified under an action plan framed in 2002. Police officers say they have also asked NHAI and PWD in other states to propose other alternative routes if these roads are found to be unusable.

Vehicles will be stopped at Mohan Nagar, Ghazipur, Murthal, Rajiv Gandhi Chowk in Gurgaon, Faridabad-Palwal crossing or at the Greater Noida Expressway crossing. Police officer said the civic bodies in these states have been asked to acquire space to facilitate the diversions.

According to an estimate, over 80,000 vehicles enter the city, of which more than 80% are non-destined vehicles. Passing through Delhi proves economical for truck drivers -here they need to pay a toll tax of Rs 300 as against Rs 900 (approximately) in other states, said a traffic police officer.

The traffic police have also requested the state government to revamp infrastructure at Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar
