DEHRADUN: In a one-of-its-kind move initiated by the Pauri administration, nearly 2,200 school students and officials of all public works departments jointly launched a cleanliness drive in the town on Friday.

All 11 wards in the town were cleaned in single day by the collective efforts of students, government officials and social organizations. On regular days, the Pauri municipal council generates nearly 2.5 tonne waste. However, more than 9 tonne solid waste was collected by the locals.

The campaign, organized on the lines of the Swacchh Bharat Abhiyaan, was held from morning till noon. As the drive yielded positive results, the administration is now mulling to make it a regular feature every month.

Giving details, Harak Singh Rawat, additional commissioner (administration) of Pauri, said, "We want to keep the town clean in a scientific way as Himalayan regions are sensitive and face the brunt of ever-increasing pollution due to climate change. Our aim is to rope in the younger generation and educate them on negative effects of environment pollution. We will hold more such drives and workshops in the town so that Pauri maintains its clean and green image."

Taking a step further to ensure cleanliness, council officers said the Pauri municipal council would start a door-to-door waste collection drive in Pauri.

The council is also mulling to find a suitable spot for dumping solid waste as no proper site has been earmarked till date.
