No data on diesel pollution

AHMEDABAD: The state government informed Gujarat high court on Friday that it has no data on the air pollution caused by diesel vehicles across the state. The government also submitted that it does not have the jurisdiction to cancel registration of vehicles older than 10 years. This power lies with the Centre under the Motor Vehicles Act.

The government, however, submitted that during its special drives conducted by RTOs in four major cities, no diesel vehicle was found violating pollution norms.

The high court had asked the government whether diesel vehicles older than 10 years could be discontinued in order to reduce pollution.

The court had also posed several questions on the possibility of converting all vehicles plying on state roads to CNG or LPG in order to reduce pollution levels. Three years ago, the high court had ordered the government to make all vehicles switch from other fuels to gas.

On Friday, the high court asked the authorities to randomly pick all kinds of diesel vehicles from petrol pumps and check them for their pollution levels. This checking is to be done on vehicles registered 15 years, 14 years or 13 years ago. The data thus generated is to be collected and then analyzed.
