Air Pollution: GPCB set to hold survey of 10-year-old diesel vehicles

Correspondent :
The Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) is set to conduct a survey to map the vehicular emission from the ten-year-old four- and two-wheelers. It will submit the survey report to the Gujarat High Court in two months. The move comes following direction issued by the court to the board seeking suggestions on how to discontinue phase-wise use of ten-year-old diesel vehicles in order to reduce the pollution level. The GPCB on Friday submitted before the division bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Jayant Patel wherein it has proposed, “to undertake a field survey and emission sampling from on-road diesel vehicles of different ages and models, for assessment of actual pollution level generated by diesel vehicles.” GPCB has proposed to conduct this exercise in four cities — Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat and Rajkot. “Tie-up will be made with strategically selected four authorised PUC centres in each of the cities. Hence, total number of sampling locations will be 16,” the proposal states.

The proposal says that the samples of vehicular exhaust emissions would be collected from vehicles randomly. And 1,000 samples will be collected from each of the PUC centres from the four cities. Special teams will be formed for this exercise which will consists officials from GPCB, regional transport office (RTO) and police. Last month, the court had sought suggestions from the government on how to discontinue the use of diesel vehicles if they were causing pollution. The bench has sought these details on a set of petitions seeking review of its own order which was passed by a different bench in 2014 on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) directing the state to convert all vehicles to CNG. The review petition has been filed by Indian Auto LPG Coalition (IAC).
