Lion population in Gir increases fourfold

Population of lions has increased 4 folds in the lion territory of Gujarat, Gir. Apart from the one poaching incident, five deaths by electrocution and 13 lions that washed away in the flash floods, Gir by and large has been one of the safe areas for lions.

Around 40% of lion population of Gujaratis concentrated in Amreli and Bhavnagardistrict alone. 211 out of 523 lions live there. According to forest officials, the area covered by lions has increased from 5000 sqkm in 2005, to 10,000 sqkm in 2010, to 22,000 sqkm in 2015, reports an English daily.

The locals in the areas near Gir, take pride in the growth of the lion population in Gir.
