Manage it sustainably

In a globalised world witnessing climate change, dis ciplines related to sustainability and environmental management are gaining in importance. Earlier, this was a niche field because few organisations focussed on the environment as a policy matter. Today, business and governments realise the need to focus on sustainable management and more organi sations are working on sustainability reports. Various employers need to recruit environmental managers as well as health and safety officers.

Environmental management covers themes related to sustainability, policy and compliance, energy and resources as well as auditing and systems implementation. At various universities, its curriculum can include geography, sustainability, management processes (with a focus on tools governments and organisations can use to improve environmental processes) as well as globalisation and the environment. One can specialise in different areas such as water resources, agriculture and business manage ment. Another specialisation now on offer is food security.

Those completing a postgraduate programme in this field can find employment in non-profits, the gas industry, government entities as well as in universities where they are not just employed as researchers but also as environment managers. Some of the tasks one would do in this field are assessing and managing sustainability, systems compliance and processes as well as reducing carbon footprints. Those with a food security specialisation can consider positions related to sustainable agriculture as well as food supply chain management.

Since the study programmes are meant to train individuals for a range of jobs, those with a professional background in civil, structural or mechanical engineering, health and safety and even law may find it relevant. Students enrol for the programme right after their undergraduate degree, especially in allied disciplines such as development, conservation and social work. Those with substantial work experience in any field can apply as long as they can provide a justification as to why they wish to sign up for it. Many may choose to do this because of a change in their job role or they may feel the need to diversify and gain additional knowledge of a niche area that interests them.
