MCDs to collect pollution tax: Government

After announcing its intention to impose a pollution tax on goods vehicles entering the national capital in the Budget, the Delhi government has decided to appoint MCDs as the nodal agency to collect the congestion fees. In his Budget speech, deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia announced that the AAP government would impose a congestion fees on goods vehicles entering in Delhi, identifying them as a major contributor to air pollution in the national capital. “The civic bodies will be asked to collect congestion fees levied on goods vehicles entering Delhi. For which, the government will provide strong mechanism to municipal corporations to effectively implement it,” Mr Sisodia said.

He said, at present, civic bodies collect toll tax through manual system due to which there are some leakages in collection. “We will also give modern technology to civic bodies to check this leakage,” the deputy CM said, adding that the AAP government will use the amount to augment environment-friendly public transport system in the capital. As per the fees structure, entry charges for tempo (light commercial vehicle) will be Rs 100, four-wheel trucks Rs 500, six-wheel trucks Rs 750, 10-wheel trucks Rs 1,000 and 14-wheel trucks Rs 1,500. According to a senior official, the Delhi government’s environment department will look after the project.
