SHILLONG: The district commissioner of East Khasi Hills, Shillong, said the quality of air has deteriorated in Shillong city due to vehicular emissions and rise in population in addition to domestic and other sources of air pollution.

"In a bid to prevent and control air pollution and restore ambient air quality and in compliance with the order of the National Green Tribunal, people are requested to promote the use of LPG as domestic fuel instead of burning coal or wood in the district. Anyone facing difficulties in getting domestic LPG connection can approach the DC's office," read a public notice issued by the DC on Wednesday.

"The order has been issued for the safety and health of the public," the notice said. The state capital has been experiencing rapid population growth and urbanization. According to the latest report of the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board, it is estimated that about 80% of the pollution is caused by indiscriminate discharge or disposal of domestic sewage, trade effluents, urban solid wastes, bio-medical wastes, domestic fuel and vehicular emissions. "Exhaust emission from vehicles is a major contributor to air pollution as roads are the only mode of transport in the state," the report said. The board has identified 1,384 polluting industrial units in the state, with most of them being small and tiny units.
