GHAZIABAD: Tonnes of garbage is regularly being carried to the banks of the Hindonriver, near Nandi Park along Raj Nagar Extension Road, and dumped there, allegedly for land filling.

A large part of the garbage is also being burned at the site on a daily basis, creating large-scale air pollution in the area. Surprisingly, much of the garbage is being carried to the site by trucks belonging to the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC).

Vikrant Kumar of Hindon Jal Biradari, an NGO, alleged despite written complaints to the GMC and the GDA, the civic body has so far done little.

When contacted, GMC's health officer RK Yadav said, "We have being watching this development for some time. It appears some land grabbers are filling up parts of the Hindon with garbage to later use the filled in area for construction. Some little construction has already come up. We will take action if you provide us specific details of the culprit. Or maybe, the identities of any GMC officials involved."

Ghaziabad's district magistrate Vimal Kumar Sharma said, "I have written to the GMC last week to take the sternest action against the land mafia and those trying to grab the land, destroy our river and add to air pollution. No excuse will be entertained in such a serious matter. It cannot happen without official connivance."

He added, "And, we are examining other legal provisions where the concerned heads of various departments could be made responsible if the culprits are not nabbed soon."
