World Oceans Day is celebrated on June 8 in order to bring awareness about the importance of our planet's oceans, improve its current state and celebrate its beauty.

"The oceans are vast – but their capacity to withstand human damage is limited," states Ban Ki-moon in a press release.

Contributing to its detriment, like illegal, unregulated fishing, unsustainable aquaculture practises, marine pollution, climate change and ocean acidification are some of the factors taking a toll on the world’s oceans and seas, according to the UN.

The UN's theme for 2015 is 'Healthy oceans, healthy planet'.

"Our oceans regulate the climate and process nutrients through natural cycles while providing a wide range of services, including natural resources, food and jobs that benefit billions of people," states Ban Ki-moon who urges it is imperative that we all take responsibility to ensure its well being.

“Given how critical oceans are to the health of our planet and the prosperity of people, they are an essential element in our emerging vision for sustainable development, including the new set of sustainable development goals now being prepared to guide the global fight against poverty for the next 15 years,” he said in his message for the day.

The National Geographic shared the following tips for how we can all contribute to bettering our world's oceans:

- Limit the amount of plastic products you consume

- Avoid purchasing items that exploit marine life

- Take better care of beaches

- Consume seafood that is healthy and sustainable

- Educate yourself on oceans and marine life
