MSU to organize seminar to celebrate World Environment Day

VADODARA: M S University's Faculty of Science in association with city-based Socleen, Indian Association for Air Pollution Control, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the Baroda chapter of the Indian Science Congress Association will organize a seminar on June 5 to celebrate World Environment Day.

The seminar will be organized on the theme selected by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) - 'Seven Billion Dreams, One Planet, Consume with Care'.

The seminar will be organized at professor S S Merh Hall. During the seminar B R Naidu, additional director of CPCB will speak on steps taken by government to reduce pollution in west zone.

Professor Jaidevi, a professor of civil engineer from IITRAM, Ahmedabad will speak on effect of air pollutant on Taj Mahal.

According to a recent report, a chemical named polymethyl methacrylate is responsible for yellowing of the Taj. ASI's report has also said that another chemicals aluminum silicate and magnesium trisilicate in Fuller's earth pack may be harmful to the white marble of the Taj Mahal.

"Another invited speaker is B K Sinha, an IFS officer, who is member secretary of Government of Gujarat. It is interesting to note that recent census have shown 524 lions inhabiting in Gir. How to maintain such habitats and ensure wildlife is really a challenge? He will elaborate on these topics," said officiating head of Department of Botany professor Arun Arya.

An elocution competition for school and college going children will be also held on June 5. The competition will be organized in Gujarati, English and Hindi.
