Youth gearing up for the World Environment Day
Exploitation of resources leads to imbalance in the ecosystem. By shifting to the farming patterns that need less fresh water consumption, changing the diet pattern according to the resources available and adopting scientific methods of planting trees, one can contribute to responsible management of natural resources, according to A.J. Solomon Raju, Professor in Department of Environmental Sciences, Andhra University. He was addressing students of Aditya Degree College, NSS volunteers and environmental activists who gathered at the college campus to participate in natural resources conservation advocacy drive presented jointly by India Youth for Society (IYFS), T-Foundation and Green Youth Brigade on Monday. He stressed on the innovative strategies that can be adopted to prevent wastage of food, water and energy and encouraged students to play a significant role in bringing down the disaster risks such as climate change and global warming.
With ‘Seven Billion Dreams One Planet Consume with Care’ as the theme of the year recommended by United Nations Environment Programme, the campaign was organised as a prelude to World Environment Day celebrations to be observed on June 5.
Experts spoke on how indiscriminate use of natural resources and unhealthy practices of energy consumption leave an irreversible impact on environment and push the planet towards greater risks. A couple of students also spoke on how every individual can contribute to saving the planet by taking small steps.
The programme was attended by P. Madhu, M. Jagadish and Y. Appala Reddy of IYFS, S. Indraja of Green Youth Brigade and principal of Aditya Degree College S.V. Babji.
To cope with a number of environmental issues and empower youth to become green warriors, IYFS is conducting a drawing competition at Ba Bapu Bhavan, Gayatri Vidya Parishad Junior College premises on June 3. This apart, the society in association with Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board proposes to organise a massive rally on June 5 from Kali Mata temple to YMCA on the Beach Road.
