INDORE: Ten peacocks have been mauled by stray dogs in last two days in Bagred village of Neemuch district. The birds turned out to be an easy prey for dogs after the birds fell unconscious consuming flowers laced with pesticide.

"Other than attack by stray dogs, poaching and shrinking habitat, pesticides continue to pose a bigger challenge to peacocks for their survival," said forest range officer Shriram Rathod, adding that peacocks are under the care of local populace, who often spray their fields with pesticides, and when the birds go out in search of food, they tend to consume pesticides. Viscera samples have been sent to lab for investigation.

Villagers, however, held the forest officials responsible for the death of the national bird. "We had informed forest officials about peacocks falling prey to stray dogs, but no action was taken," said Sonaram Chouhan, a resident of Bagred village, adding that timely action could have saved their life.
