Daily bulletin on air quality in 10 top cities launched , Saturday, May 02, 2015

New Delhi: The government on Friday started a daily bulletin on air quality in 10 top cities after launching the National Air Quality Index last month.

Delhi’s air quality was the worst on the first day of the bulletin.

In April, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the index that measures air quality in 10 Indian cities. The environment ministry plans to start measurements in 66 additional cities.

The daily bulletin will available in the evening on the website of the Central Pollution Control Board.

Among the 10 cities, the quality of air on Friday was the poorest in Delhi, moderate in Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Faridabad, Kanpur, Agra, Varanasi and satisfactory in Chennai.

The first bulletin faced teething troubles as details for Bengaluru and Lucknow were not available due to technical problems. The launch of the air quality index too had faced similar problems.

Concerns about air pollution in Indian cities have gained prominence in the past few months. Of the 20 most polluted cities in the world, 13 are in India, with Delhi at the top, a recent report by the World Health Organization showed.
