JAIPUR: A recent National Green Tribunal (NGT) order taking cognizance of rampant illegal mining in Tijara, and Tapukara in Alwar district and Kishangarh had prohibited all illegal mining and banned the entry of all trucks and JCBs. The prohibition exempted vehicles owned by the state government for restoration purpose for which the specific permit will be issued by the deputy commissioner of Alwar. Besides, the state government has been instructed to seize all illegal and unauthorized crushers/grinders operating in that area.

The tribunal in its order said that records reveal that illegal and unauthorised mining on in Alwar is a matter of serious concern. The extent of illegal mining has adversely affected the ecology and environment of the area and there is definite degradation of the same. It is further indisputable that this area is surrounded by the Sariska tiger reserve on one side and Bharatpur bird sanctuary on the other. Indiscriminate and rampant mining has resulted in adversely affecting the tiger life and has also caused serious damage to the health of the people living around those areas because of air pollution.

According to a report in May 2014, around 3,000 to 3,500 kg of explosives is used at one go and 4 bore holes are drilled to plant explosives to blast hillocks and rocks. The quantity is so huge that almost 1,000 dumpers, each carrying approximately 45 to 60 ton stone, are loaded and transported to neighboring Haryana every night. The area in which illegal, unauthorized and rampant mining is going on is stated to be approximately 2612.64 hectares, ironically to which the state government had shut their eyes to.

Now, the tribunal has ordered the state government to file a complete and comprehensive plan for restoration, reforestation and reclamation of the entire area and state the cost involved there for and the agency which will carry on such a project. The project report giving complete time frame, specific to that area, shall be prepared by a specialized agency. And the deputy commissioner and SP of Alwar would be personally responsible for compliance of these directions.

Besides, the state government would also file a list of all the persons who had been found carrying on illegally, unauthorized mining activity so far.
