BHOPAL: A tiger cub died in a trap kept at a farmhouse of former Congress minister and deputy speaker of legislative assembly Rajendra Singh in buffer zone of Bandhavgarh National Tiger Reserve in Umaria district. The farmhouse, spread over 35 acres is at Basa village under Taala range of the reserve.

Singh held industry portfolio in the Digvijaya Singh-led Congress government.

Carcass was found on Sunday and a tigress and another cub are still inside fencing of the farmhouse, Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve field director Murli Krishna said.

Krishna said, "The cub was found dead and the carcass was burnt. It was found trapped in the farmhouse of Singh," Krishna said.

"Caretaker of farm Kundan Sahoo, who was present at the farmhouse, expressed his ignorance about the trap. Taking serious view of the matter, we have constituted a probe committee to inquire into the issue," Krishna said, adding, "Laying trap is illegal and we have asked for a dog squad from Jabalpur."

Hide, nails, teeth were intact and it doesn't appear to be a case of poaching. There were injury marks on animal's neck, he added.

It is a personal property and was built when forest laws allowed purchasing land in that area.

Repeated efforts to contact Singh to get his reaction proved futile.
