BHOPAL: Amid a pan India crackdown on absconding poachers, timely action by forest officers saved a tiger cub from deadly trap laid in Kanha Tiger Reserve (KTR) of Madhya Pradesh.

It was a clutch-wire trap, which the reserve's field director J S Chouhan claims was for trapping wild-boars by local villagers. "We spotted the cub in right time and rescued it. It has united with its mother," he told TOI.

Investigations are on to identify and arrest the accused.

It was tranquilised and rescued from the trap. According to the last tiger census 2009-10, there were around 60 big cats in KTR.

The poaching attempt is being taken seriously as Kuttu Chhiyalal Rajgond, 35, a notorious poacher involved in killing of two tigers in Khumari near Mansinghdeo Wildlife Sanctuary in Nagpur division and one at Tumsar, was arrested from a village of Katni district recently. Kuttu was arrested by a joint team of CBI and wildlife crime cell (WCC), Melghat. The accused, who will be in CBI custody, has been taken to Nagpur on transit remand by the team.

Sources said team had actually gone to nab Keru, brother of tiger poacher Ajit, Kuttu and Sheru, all involved in killing tigers in the region. While Keru and Sheru escaped, Kuttu was nabbed. Ajit is in Nagpur Central Jail. Keru and Sheru are still absconding. Ajit and Keru had sold two skins from Umred to Sarju.
