‘We must protect endangered species’

Quest asked students of Mumbai schools: Should more be done to protect and preserve endangered animals?

Wildlife is of utmost importance to the society as it serves aesthetic, economic and educational purposes. Legislation has been enacted promoting preservation of endangered species. Factors like pollution and poaching led to animal species to be endangered, like mountain gorilla, Chinese giant salamander, Ethiopian wolf, northern white rhinoceros. Beginning of human revolution species becoming endangered.Governments and NGOs have taken steps to preserve the endangered species, but more needs to be done to protect these animals’ natural habitat. Protection against human intervention will boost conservation of natural ecosystem and ultimately the preservation of the endangered species. Deforestation also disturbs the delicate functioning of the natural ecosystem. Yes, animals are disappearing. We all should pay more attention to our environment and animals by protecting them and make strict laws for the people destructing theanimal life.The food chain and the cycle of animals is getting affected severely due to which the ecosystem is getting imbalanced. Many people have heard about Keiko, the killer whale that starred in the movie FreeWilly. After seeing the movie, the audience discovered that the friendly whale in the movie was kept in a tank too small and was in bad health because of that and other complications that come with being taken from its natural habitat to a place where it can’t meet its own needs. Soon, a foundation was set up and money started pouring in from children and their schools to come up with a plan to free Keiko. There are wonderful stories about adorable animals that do something amazing or need our help. There are also stories about animals that are used in good and bad experiments. When you hear about the use of some animals for research, you feel like forgetting aboutresearch. Endangered animals are the ones who happen to be on the verge of extinction and are rarely found. Today, we find several endangered species but was the situation same before a millennium or prior to that? No, it is we humans who have made use of these poor creatures for our livelihood. To rectify this major mistake created by us I think we should preserve and protect endangered animals. Various remedial measures can be adopted for this purpose. Awareness creation, hybridization, zoo keeping, ban on wanton hunting and many more are methods to be used. Especially the
