KOLKATA: US ambassador to India Richard Verma on Wednesday said that India and the US are destined to be a force for regional and global change. He was delivering the keynote address on the second day of a two-day conference on "Building Pan-Asian Connectivity" in Kolkata.

Stating that Kolkata will continue to be one of Asia's most important political and economic centers of gravity and a true gateway city between south and east Asia, Verma also spoke of the advantages of greater connectivity within south and southeast Asia. But connecting this region will not be easy, Verma cautioned, while listing three specific challenges to pan-Asian connectivity: inclusive economic growth, good governance and climate change. The central purpose of pan-Asian connectivity is giving people a better way of life, prosperity and security. "For connectivity to be meaningful and sustainable, all people have to benefit," Verma said.

Noting that "India is emerging as a regional leader in creating policies to encourage inclusive economic growth", Verma said that USAID and India are finalizing an agreement to establish a public-private partnership venture to create an inclusive digital economy in this country.

The conference's last session focused on environment and climate change. Speakers at this session cautioned against mega dam projects that exclude and displace local communities and create environmental challenges, while also hindering prospects of cooperation between the countries of the region. The final session featured US consul general Helen LaFave, Indiana University's political scientist Sumit Ganguly and Observer Research Foundation's distinguished fellow Ashok Dhar.
