Climate experts to meet today

Kolkata: Climate experts will put their heads together in the city on Monday to discuss the fifth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

The fifth assessment report of the IPCC is a scientific document that lays out future scenarios on climate change and its risks and impacts.

It is crucial for policymakers, bureaucrats and action groups to deliberate on the report and chalk out pollution mitigation strategies ahead of the next conference of parties that is scheduled in Paris later this year. The conference of parties is the supreme decision making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

When Kolkata was hosting a dissemination workshop of the IPCC's fourth assessment report in 2007, the Nobel committee declared IPCC the co-sharer of the Nobel Peace Prize. The announcement had triggered a modest celebration among scientists, researchers and experts present for grim deliberations on the subject.

"The fifth assessment report is very important especially in forming the basis for negotiation in the next conference of parties. The report clearly mentions that there is an urgency for action to control climate change. No country can avoid taking action to avoid major natural disasters and huge damages," said professor of economics at Jadavpur University Joyashree Roy, who has co-authored the fifth assessment report of IPCC.

"The next conference of parties will look forward to action commitments from all countries, especially countries such as China and India. This is an opportunity for new investments and new development pathways at local levels," she added.

It is increasingly being accepted in policy research that state governments are no less important than the Centre when it comes to climate talks.

"The primary aim of the IPCC dissemination workshop in Kolkata is to reach out to the major stakeholders with latest information and inform them about the options and the way forward. Expert from various countries will present latest scientific knowledge and interact with state level experts on the occasion," said an official.
