CHENNAI: A mechanism for early detection of various pollutants is required for a cleaner environment as there are regulatory controls in place to bring about action when the environment is at risk, said Madras University Vice Chancellor Professor Thandavan, at the inauguration of a one-day national conference on ‘Environment for Health, Wealth and Peace’ at the Guru Shree Shantivijai Jain College for Women on Thursday. “These days, issues like air, noise pollution, climate change and sanitation are plaguing the enviroment around us. These have led to respiratory diseases like asthma, besides leading to more health complication like neurological and reproductive disorders. This can, in turn, affect future generations,” he added. Quoting the Dalai Lama, he said, “If we unbalance nature, mankind will suffer,” and stressed the need for more positive discussions and steps to protect nature in the longer run, by the student community. The one-day conference saw the participation of over 30 regional and national colleges in events and technical sessions on how to approach issues pertaining to the environment and health.
