Quoting the PM, environment minister Prakash Javadekar told reporters that India should play a positive role in fighting climate change on a global scale and highlight the work done by it in this regard.

In the meeting, Modi said that climate change was an opportunity to bring about positive change and that it should not be seen just as a problem. He also called for a consortium of countries with high solar energy potential and shift from carbon credit to green credit at the meeting.

The PM, Javadekar said, also reviewed the work being done to decide ‘intended nationally determined commitment to fight climate change’ that each country has to submit for the new climate treaty to be signed in Paris later this year.

Javadekar briefed the members of the council on India taking all countries on board to arrive at a positive outcome at Lima climate conference.

According to sources, the PM held discussions on the new Adaptation Fund and its contours. He was also briefed about how the new fund will help farmers to adapt to climate change.

He also reviewed the work done under the eight missions of the National Action Plan On Climate Change launched by the UPA government.

Sources said the PM was also briefed on work being done to clean Ganga and improve air quality in major cities.

Apart from environment minister Prakash Javadekar, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, water resources Uma Bharti, agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh and science and technology minister Harshvardhan are also members of the Prime Minister Council on Climate Change.
