"Normally, flamingos are seen in flocks but these were on the ground by themselves. On closer examination, we found that the wings of both the birds were hurt by something sharp, like a wire," said Sanjay Gharat, a local villager.

Both birds were handed over to the authorities for further treatment. Activists in Uran believe that the birds may have either accidentally hit a high-tension cable or were harmed by a poacher.

This incident, officials said, is similar to the one in February last year when feathers and beaks were found in Vashi.

"In February 2014, several broken flamingo beaks and feathers were found. We think that poachers may have killed them. We, however, have no conclusive proof that these two found in Uran may also have been targeted by poachers," said activist M Thali.

There have been no wildlife poaching arrests in Navi Mumbai since 2007, when two men were arrested for hunting flamingos."Rampant urbanization is hurting the wildlife at a fast clip," said environmentalist D Stalin.
