Move to stop poaching of migratory birds

Motihari: Divisional forest officer (DFO), East Champaran, Mokhtarul Haque has launched a special drive against poaching, trapping, killing and marketing of migratory birds in the district this winter season.

He has also requested the social workers and bird lovers to protect these winged visitors to water bodies.

Two trapped Common Teal birds were recovered by a special team of environment and forest department from the house of a bird trapper at village Sarottar and a case has been lodged against one Madan Sahani with the Dumariyaghat police station but is evading arrest.

East Champaran DM Jitendranath Srivastav and SP Sunil Kumar have taken effective steps to stop trapping and marketing of these migratory birds. All blocks officers and SHOs of police stations have been directed to keep vigil on lakes, river and other water bodies to ensure safety of migratory birds .

DFO Haque said environment and forest department has taken a serious note of poaching and trapping of migratory birds in the district following complaints by some MLAs of the district and has directed the district dministration to take all possible measures to stop it. Haque said he has set up a vigilance team to keep watch on water bodies and take action with the support of police against those involved in bird

poaching.

He said that he had already arrested owner of a hotel in Motihari under Wildlife Protection Act after recovery of two dozen Quail birds from hotel kitchen . For the first time this Act is being implemented strictly in the district and no migratory bird is being sold by any one at any place, he claimed.

More than 50,000 migratory birds come here in December from the European coasts, central Asian and Himalayan regions to escape the freezing cold there and they breed here in warmer environment.

They return to their homes with the on set of summer with their off-springs. Large flocks of these birds including Common Teal, Siberian cranes, Tufled Duck, Blacktail godnit, Black head , Blue throat , Red crested pochards (Lalsar), Pintails, and white necked stork were located in Sarrottar lake under Kesariya block this year .

Around 30,000 migratory birds have taken shelter in this lake spread over 6 km and along NH-28 near Dhangarha.
