Meerut: The carcass of an adult female leopard was in the forest near Hisavada village in Baghpat district on Wednesday. A case of poaching is being suspected since the big cat's jaw and front-right paw was missing.

According to villagers, they saw the carcass when they were going to their fields. "Poachers often come from Haryana for hunting wild swine. They set up cages to catch the animals. The leopard had been seen for the last few days in the area. Maybe the leopard got stuck in a cage and the poachers killed it. There are clear signs of poaching at the spot since the paw and jaw of the big cat had been cut off."

Forest department officials rushed to the spot after receiving the information. A case was lodged against unidentified suspects under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and an investigation has been started. Divisional forest officer Manish Mittal told TOI, "It doesn't seem to be a natural death and it can't be denied that the leopard was killed by the poachers. We are preparing for post mortem of the cat and after that we would be able to say anything."
