Two tiger cubs have been found dead in the Sigur reserve forest area adjoining the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR). The death of two tiger cubs, one found in a decomposed state and the other in a semi-decomposed state, in the Adicombai area in the Sigur reserve forest that comes under the jurisdiction of Nilgiris north forest division, has shocked foresters. Ruling out poaching, Mr. K. Soundarapandian, district forest officer, Nilgiris north forest division said that while one cub was found to be a male, the sex of the other could not be determined as it was decomposed. “Both the cubs were in the age group of 6 to 10 months.

There was no trace of human inflicted injuries. Since the tiger is a territorial animal, it appears that a dominant male tiger in the territory may have killed both these cubs, who could have been with their mother, as they might have been a hindrance for mating. The incident would have taken place a couple of days ago. An on-the-spot autopsy on the carcasses was done on Friday and samples collected,” he added. Meanwhile, Mr K. Vijay, member of the Nilgiris Wildlife and Environ-mental Association, said that the carcasses were found about 900 metres away from the anti-poaching camp in Adicombai.
