Gitam to Hold Global Meet on Disaster Management

VISAKHAPATNAM: The civil engineering department of GITAM University is organising a two-day international conference on ‘Professional Engineers: Challenges in Disaster Management’ (ICPECDM-14) on December 18 and 19.

GITAM vice-chancellor G Subrahmanyam told reporters here Tuesday that as many as 200 delegates from various organisations like DST, Indian Meteorological Department, Visakhapatnam Port Trust, Geological Survey of India and Visakhapatnam Steel Plant besides many professional engineers will take part in it.

Speakers from RMIT-Australia, University of South Dakota and Purdue University-USA and University of Windsor-Canada will present 50 papers covering preparedness for disasters, disaster prevention and mitigation, climate change and environmental impact, remote sensing and GIS, rehabilitation and reconstruction, case studies and river flooding management, he informed.

“Since the state has a long coastline, there are more chances of cyclone. Further, manmade hazards have been making their own mark in the recent past. Against this backdrop, there is a need for the people to know the precautionary measures to be taken before and after a disaster,” he opined.

The recent cyclone Hudhud ravaged Visakhapatnam completely by severely damaging the green cover and properties. Fortunately, there was minimal loss of life. In such cases, disaster relief materials could be the contingency plans for the areas, he pointed out and added that the conference would also discuss some case studies on Hudhud.

GITAM pro-VC D Harinarayana, registrar M Potharaju, principal GIT K Lakshmi Prasad and civil department officials were present.
