MUMBAI: Animal rights activists in the city are up in arms over a recent statement made by Union minister of state for environment, forest and climate change, Prakash Javadekar, about reinstating bullock cart races in the country.

A city-based activist, Gargi Gogoi, has sent a legal notice to Javadekar, asking him to take back his statement at a public forum.

The Maharashtra government had in 2011 banned bullock cart racing. A petition included the 'bull' in the list of animals that could not be used as performing animals.

Javadekar had recently said at a press meet that he would be open to the idea of holding discussions to bring back bullock cart races.

The Union minister had also hinted at a plan to issue a notification to allow bullock cart racing in the country.

The activist's legal notice maintains that Javadekar must refrain from allowing the notification to come into force.

Manoj Oswal, an animal rights activist, said that bullock cart races were outright cruel.

Another activist, Ajay Marathe, said that bullock cart races are a form of "downright cruelty" to animals who do not understand the fact that they need to excel in the race.

"To make the bullocks run faster, they are beaten with pointed iron rods and other harmful material so as to inflict pain on the bull," said Marathe.
