4 city schools make it to Nat’l Science Congress

Thane: Four groups from Thane city and one from Navi Mumbai have been selected to represent India at the National level of the National Children's Science Congress this year. The competition has been organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology between December 27 and 31 at Banglore. Thane district has produced the highest number of entries among the state.

While the topic of carbon footprints and carbon credits have been most commonly used topic for presentations at college levels, the 10 and 11-year-old students from Bhagvati Vidyalaya, Thane have given it a far more realistic twist. Students in their project have highlighted how much the students studying in schools contribute to the climate change.

Students of Euro School, Airoli found out the effects of glass facades on the climate changes. With rapid urbanization, the number of glass facades has only increased in the city.

Students from Saraswati Vidyalaya, Rabodi found out the negative as well as positive effect of Carbon dioxide on the plant lives.

While their counterparts from Shreerang Vidalaya focused on topics that dealt with climate and terrestrial changes on aquatic acidification. The junior group from Bedekar Vidyamandir had their project based on the vehicle pollution and its effect on weather conditions. These students went one step ahead and created a gadget to curb the problem as well.

Surendra Dighe, executive president, National Centre for Science Education (NCSE) Maharashtra and the managing trustee of Jidnyasa Trust, Thane, said, "These students have come this far and made all of us proud. " Of the 53 groups from Maharashtra, 26 were selected to represent the country. This competition will also be taking place for the Adivasi Ashram Schools in Thane, Nashik, Amravati and Nagpur divisions of the Adivasi Vikas Vibhag, Maharashtra.
