CHANDIGARH: From climate change to the romantic tale of Heer and Ranjha, the world of puppets will bring alive two diverse stories over two days this weekend as part of culmination of Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi's Puppet Theatre Festival on December 6 and 7.

On the first day, 'The Little Blue Planet' directed by Anurupa Roy of Kat Katha, Delhi, will be staged at Tagore Theatre in Sector 18. The Little Blue Planet was commissioned as part of a project with Climate Change Project-India. The show looks at the phenomena of rapid climate change in the world today caused by irresponsible human exploitation of natural resources which causes extreme weather changes, floods and droughts displacing millions around the world.

The show has no spoken words and was created mainly for children and families. It was premiered at the Little Theatre, NCPA Mumbai.

On December 7, 'Heer Ke Waris' will be performed by the Ishara Puppet Theatre Trust. Directed by Dadi D Pudumjee, the play has been co-directed by Maheep Singh. The timeless tale of star-crossed lovers Heer and Ranjha by Punjabi Sufi poet Waris Shah is one of the most well loved in India. Interweaving puppets, actors, dance, visual images and music in a spellbinding poetic presentation, Ishara will bring to life this eternal romance, originally written in the 18th century.

Dadi Pudumjee is one of India's foremost and innovative puppeteers. The first non-European president of the International Puppetry Organisation- UNIMA (Union International de la Marionette); in 1986, he established the Ishara Puppet Theatre. He's helped contemporary puppetry gain legitimacy as an art form in India. For his efforts, he's been bestowed with numerous accolades, including Sangeet Natak Akademi Award 1993 and the Padma Shri in 2011.
