On a green mission

The Hindu , Friday, November 28, 2014
Correspondent :
With a mission to enhance the role of students and women in protecting the flora and fauna of the coastal region that has been hit hard by cyclone Hudhud, Green Climate team has mooted a slew of eco-measures to develop the city as ‘Eco-friendly Visakha’.

Bringing an eight-page booklet, encapsulating a scientific approach of planting trees depending on the climatic and geographical conditions of the region, representatives of Green Climate and its women’s wing along with Environmental Film Society plan to visit schools, colleges and universities across the city.

Workshops, awareness programmes and documentary film screening depicting the adverse effects of carbon emissions and climate change form a part of the green initiative spread throughout the year.

In addition to this, awards like ‘Eco Friendly Visakha’ and ‘Green Woman Visakha’ will be given away to those who strived to help restore the green canopy. “We will be visiting hundreds of schools (both private and government) for the purpose. For higher participation, officials concerned, NGO representatives and all the stakeholders will be roped in,” says J.V. Ratnam of Green Climate.

Keeping the growing industrialisation in view, P.V. Ramana of Struggle Committee Against Privatisation called for a collective action to deal with the challenges. “Unless we consider serious measures to curb growing pollution, urbanisation and industrialisation, disaster such as cyclone Hudhud is bound to happen,” he says.

Workshop

On Sunday, the team is conducting a workshop on ‘climate change and our role to fight against it’ at Visakhapatnam Public Library at 9.30 a.m. Further details can be had over phone Nos 7670873421 or 9948833010.
