JORHAT : Poachers killed a male rhino at Kaziranga National Park on Thursday. However, the horn of the pachyderm was found intact.

Park officials said poachers targeted the pachyderm near the Laudubi anti-poaching camp in the Kohora forest range of the park on Wednesday night. But they could not chop off its horn due to strong security arrangements.

"The poachers opened fire targeting the rhino. They also tried to chop off its horn. But on hearing sounds of gunshots, our staff reached the spot and retaliated. They also chased away the poachers," said forest range officer (Kaziranga) SK Seal Sharma.

He added that operation against poachers is on. But no one has been arrested so far.

"We have launched a combing operation in all probable locations in the park in search of poachers. But we are still clueless on their whereabouts. We believe they have already run out from the park periphery," he said.

The poachers group, equipped with .303 rifles, entered the park's Kohora forest range on Wednesday night. They opened fire at the rhino, leaving it injured critically. Forest staff on duty retaliated and a heavy exchange of fire ensued which lasted for about half an hour. But the poachers group managed to escape from the spot under the cover of darkness.

Later, veterinarians rushed to the spot and tried to provide treatment but in vain.
