Eexperts discuss various aspects of farm diversification at PAU national symposium

LUDHIANA: Deliberations on integrated farming system, climate change, and agronomy education were held on the second day of the national symposium on "Agricultural Diversification for Sustainable Livelihood and Environmental Security," going on at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). Earlier, experts discussed the scope, relevance and options for diversification in different agro-ecosystems under changing climate. The thrust was also laid on horticulture, multi-purpose trees and new underutilized crop based agriculture systems for vulnerable agro-ecosystems. "Efficient use of water, nutrients, weeds, energy, machinery and pesticides;" and "Post-harvest management: value addition, marketing and trade" were the other highlights of the symposium.

Chairing the session on "Diversification and Globalization of Agriculture," on Wednesday, J P Mishra, Advisor (Agriculture), Planning Commission, Yojna Bhawan, New Delhi expressed his views on the topic "Towards Diversified Farming in India - Opportunities and Challenges."

The session on "Agriculture Diversification: Gender Empowerment, Extension, Marketing and Policy Issues" was chaired by S S Johl, Chancellor, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda and co-chaired by J S Sandhu, Agriculture Commissioner, Department of Agriculture and Cooperation, Government of India, New Delhi. Sandhu also delivered a lecture on "Policy Interventions for Crop Diversification and Sustainability."

G S Kalkat, Chairman, Punjab State Farmers' Commission, Mohali, Punjab chaired the session on "Farmers-Industry-Scientists Interface and Public-Private Partnership in Diversification."
