NAGPUR: Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), a statutory body under the ministry of environment, forests & climate change, is finalizing a wildlife crime database for all 47 tiger reserves in the country. The database will be later extended to deputy conservators of territorial areas. This is expected strengthen anti-poaching activity and prosecution.

Since Bureau's inception in 2007, this is first such database. "To collect and collate intelligence related to organized wildlife crime activities and to disseminate the same to states and other agencies for action to apprehend criminals and to establish a centralized data bank is our mandate," said Nishant Verma, deputy director of WCCB.

WCCB will update and modify the database as per the suggestions of field directors received on October 30 in a meeting called by the NTCA in Delhi. After two months, a meeting has been called to finalize things. "The database will have multi access and information on wildlife crime will be just a click away," said Verma.

"Initially access will be given to the field directors, who will further upload information on criminals and compile analysis. This will help formulate policies and planning to combat crime. We will also be able to know species being targeted most, profile of criminals, area of operation and correlating factors," said Verma.

Till now such a database was only with wildlife crime enforcement NGO Wildlife Protection Society of India (WPSI) and National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). Looking at the alarming poaching of wild animals in the region, in 2012, the state forest department was also asked to prepare a similar database at range level but work has not progressed as officials here are not interested.
