MADURAI: Forest officials in wildlife sanctuaries in Tamil Nadu have tightened vigil to prevent poaching of wild animals during Diwali.

In the past, there were incidents of people poaching wild animals to prepare exotic food on the occasion of Diwali.

Anti-poaching squad and field staff in the sanctuaries are taking out intense patrolling along the borders of forests to prevent poaching.

"It is a preventive measure to ensure that wild animals are not poached during the Diwali festival. Last year also we carried out patrolling and ensured no one entered the forests on Diwali days," said a wildlife official at the Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary in Srivilliputhur.

"We are taking out raids along the forest areas of Megamalai sanctuary. Wildlife is thriving after the monsoon started, and poaching should be prevented", said P Sornappan, warden of the Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary.
